Guo Wei (Chinese, born 1960) was born in Chengdu, China where he currently lives and works. He graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1989 and has been exhibited internationally since 1988.
Guo’s work focuses on the individual and the development of self in China. The isolation of the individual due to the Communist system is an important theme for the artist. He addresses feelings of emptiness and desolation, which new generations of Chinese youth experience in cities. Guo’s paintings are provocative and original, touching upon the experience of alienation in society, as well as feelings of alienation from within. His frequent depictions of adolescent children in scenes suggesting aggressiveness or insolence are metaphors for the emergence of China in the 21th century.
